Lake Austin is located along the West side of the city. Lake Austin is a long, narrow lake that is, in reality, a river. Lake Austin is located down river from Lake Travis , and the Mansfield dam empties the lower depths of Lake Travis into Lake Austin.

Because of this, Lake Austin 's water temperature is consistently chilly year-round, which is very refreshing during the summer months. Because of its narrow shape, Lake Austin is known for its water sports & you can typically find wakeboarders enjoying the lake year round. Lake Austin's temperature is the optimal condition for the non-native plant hydrilla, and there is an on-going campaign to control the weed. Every winter, the Lower Colorado River Authority empties Lake Austin in a effort to kill off the plant during the cold snap.
