Cathedral of Junk’s Last Weekend in South Austin

The city is threatening to demolish the Cathedral of Junk, and this will be its last weekend open while the owner, Vince Hannemann, decides what to do about bringing it up to code.  The Cathedral is an icon of sorts in South Austin.

LOL, my oh my, that’s quite a sight. So the owner had never been asked to remove or bring up to code?

Eric, what exactly is it? Can you go inside….that looks like some sort of entrance in the front. Good heavens I hope no one is living in there!

You know what they say, Eric. One’s man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

What a shame the city is considering taking that masterpiece down! I think it’s wonderful, especially as an example to our kids that everything we consume has consequences (trash by-products) and also that trash can be re-purposed into less wasteful by-products such as art or even housing!

Why would they want to demolish that? looks like a fun work of art if you ask me.

I was just reading about this place in a Wall Street Journal article. Sounds like the surrounding community is changing drastically from when he first began building it

Even the city may not like it, I don’t think it poses any environmental or other threat. So, what’s the legal reason of taking it down?

Looks like that must have been an attraction for quite some time. In our neck of the woods there is a house like that in Centralia — quite a sight!
